Some people seem to have deeper grooves in their teeth than others. Food and plaque can get caught in these grooves, and they can also make it harder for kids to really get their teeth clean. Sealants can help fill and “seal” these deeper grooves and fissures. Sealants also protect chewing surfaces of teeth from decay and give an extra measure of protection to kids with a high risk of cavities. We generally recommend that sealants be applied to permanent molars as soon as they appear, usually around the age of six.
